On The Edge | Argentine Grand Prix 1957 | Maserati 250F | Artwork

£595.00 Sold out

An original watercolour painting

What a sight, Moss sliding his 250f followed by a very determined Fangio, on the way to his fifth World Championship and hungry for a win at his home track.

This was the 1957 Argentine Grand Prix. Juan Manuel Fangio had left Ferrari for Maserati and their much modified 250Fs. Even without him, Ferrari had one of the strongest driver lineups in history, with Mike Hawthorn moving from BRM to join Peter Collins, Luigi Musso and Eugenio Castellotti.

Since the British teams were not present, Stirling Moss - who had signed for Vanwall - was part of the Maserati lineup with Jean Behra as third driver.

Fangio and Behra raced away into the distance as the rest of the field floundered. Moss's throttle linkage broke on the startline and he lost 10 laps having it fixed. The Ferraris were all suffering terribly with clutch problems, as both Collins and Musso burnt theirs out, while Hawthorn's was slipping badly.

Both Collins and Wolfgang von Trips took over Cesare Perdisa's Ferrari in an attempt to stop the Maseratis, but were powerless to stop them taking the first four places.

Moss rejoined and set fastest lap on his way to 8th place.

How would the race have ended had Moss not lost ten laps in the pits?

Overall size (cm): 54.0 x 44.0 approx.

Neil Collins

Neil Collins watercolour artist works from old photographs and likes to research period colours to ensure that details are correct. Neil’s first national exhibition was at the RAC Art of Motoring in 2016 where his water colours found a ready market. Since then he has developed both his style and his client base. The clean lines of Neil’s pictures reflect a lifetime in design disciplines. The translucent and free flowing qualities of water colour give an immediacy to Neil’s work.

“I get an enormous amount of pleasure from researching and planning my paintings. Old photographs are fascinating, and I love to translate old black-and-white photographs into colour with my artwork. Every photograph has a narrative – sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden. I like to have this in my paintings".
