Donington Grand Prix 1937 | Caracciola Rosemeyer & Lang | Artwork

£550.00 Sold out

Original Painting of Herman Lang, closed followed by Rudolf Caracciola. Winner, Rosemeyer, can be seen far left in his Auto Union no.5. In the race, Hermann Lang led the first few laps but retired with a broken damper, and Richard Seaman followed shortly after. The lead changed hands several times between von Brauchitsch, Rosemeyer and Caraccciola. Von Brauchitsch suffered a puncture, allowing Rosemeyer to pass him and lead the race while his Auto Union teammates could not keep up with the mid-engined car.

Rosemeyer stayed in the lead until the end.

In his book, Rodney Walkerley describes the impression the German cars made." Far away in the distance we heard an angry, deep-throated roaring - as someone once remarked, like hungry lions impatient for the arena. A few moments later, Manfred von Brauchitsch, red helmeted, brought a great, silver projectile snaking down the hill, and close behind, his teammate Rudolf Caracciola, then at the height of his great career. The two cars took the hairpin, von Brauchitsch almost sideways, and rocketed away out of sight with long plumes of rubber smoke trailing from their huge rear tyres, in a deafening crash of sound.

The startled Pressmen gazed at each other, awestruck.

"Strewth, " gasped one of them, "so that's what they're like!"

That was what they were like.

Neil Collins

Neil Collins watercolour artist works from old photographs and likes to research period colours to ensure that details are correct. Neil’s first national exhibition was at the RAC Art of Motoring in 2016 where his water colours found a ready market. Since then he has developed both his style and his client base. The clean lines of Neil’s pictures reflect a lifetime in design disciplines. The translucent and free flowing qualities of water colour give an immediacy to Neil’s work.

“I get an enormous amount of pleasure from researching and planning my paintings. Old photographs are fascinating, and I love to translate old black-and-white photographs into colour with my artwork. Every photograph has a narrative – sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden. I like to have this in my paintings".
