You Blokes don't know a drift when you see one! | Ron Flockhart | D-Type Jaguar | Artwork
An original watercolour painting
Ron Flockhart deserves far more recognition than he receives. His crowning glory was twice winning the gruelling Le Mans 24-hours race - in 1956 and 1957 - as part of David Murray's Ecurie Ecosse team, the first non-works outfit to have won the race since the war.
He raced all over the world in different disciplines, from hill-climbs in Bo'ness to world sports car championships in Buenos Aires, as well as the Monte Carlo Rally and the fabled Mille Miglia in Italy. He also found time to compete in 16 grands prix. He drove for BRM and excelled in everything he drove even if mechanical issues sometimes let him down. He was devastatingly fast and well able to hold his own in the company of Moss, Hawthorn and Collins.
Throughout the Fifties, flying had been a passion of Flockhart's. He set his sights on breaking the Sydney to London single-pistoned engine solo record and began his first attempt on 28 February 1961. In interviews, when asked why he was doing it, he replied: "Because the record is there to be broken," adding that, in any event, he had to be in London for 11 March for his wedding at St Michael's-in-the-Field Church to Gillian Tatlow. The attempt failed, but he did make it up the aisle in time.
Overall size (cm): 57.0 x 44.5 approx.

Neil Collins
Neil Collins watercolour artist works from old photographs and likes to research period colours to ensure that details are correct. Neil’s first national exhibition was at the RAC Art of Motoring in 2016 where his water colours found a ready market. Since then he has developed both his style and his client base. The clean lines of Neil’s pictures reflect a lifetime in design disciplines. The translucent and free flowing qualities of water colour give an immediacy to Neil’s work.
“I get an enormous amount of pleasure from researching and planning my paintings. Old photographs are fascinating, and I love to translate old black-and-white photographs into colour with my artwork. Every photograph has a narrative – sometimes obvious, sometimes hidden. I like to have this in my paintings".
